Local YMCAs Highlight Breast Cancer Awareness in October

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Sept. 25, 2015 - PRLog -- YMCA branches in the Conejo and Simi valleys are commemorating breast cancer awareness in October with free exercise classes and other activities.

         The Miller Family YMCA of Newbury Park (320Via Las Brisas), Conejo Valley YMCA (4031 N. Moorpark Rd.) and Simi Valley Family YMCA (3200 Cochran St.) will be displaying an honor wall throughout the month where community members can recognize someone who has been touched by breast cancer. The honor walls will be displayed in the YMCAs’ lobbies.

         Breast cancer survivors can sign up for a free one-month membership during October at any of the three YMCA branches (offer available to current non-members only). “Our goal is to give survivors and those currently battling cancer with opportunities that will strengthen their spirit and body,” says Katie Beck, executive director of the Miller YMCA.

         Phyllis Levine, a cancer survivor, overcame two bouts of cancer. “I’m thriving,” says Levine, who works out regularly at the Miller Y. “At the Y, I have met and connected with a strong support of people, now my friends, awesome instructors and dynamic directors. All help me stay focused and involved in a lifestyle of healthy eating and exercising.”

         Every Monday in October, the Miller Y will hold a free Zumba class especially for cancer patients and survivors. The classes begin at 12:30 p.m. On October 19, the three YMCA branches will offer healthy snacks made with foods that help prevent cancer.
