AWENDAW, S.C. - Sept. 22, 2015 - PRLog -- The Institute for Patient-Centered Design will host its inaugural Patient-Centered Design Innovation Summit (PCD-IS) at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) from Sunday, Sept. 27 through Tuesday, Sept. 29. Nearly 200 registrants, representing over 30 states, will converge in an effort to contribute to design solutions that will improve the patient and family experience in healthcare facilities around the world.

“We are very proud to have the opportunity to host our inaugural summit at MUSC, a leading medical research institution,” says Tammy Thompson, the Institute's president. "Using the state of the art Simulation Center at MUSC, we will be able to conduct multiple simulation labs during the program."

Designed with limited seats, the Summit will allow our participants to collaborate in small groups, form business relationships and brainstorm new design solutions. “It will be a groundbreaking event as a multidisciplinary group of leaders in the health facility design profession, along with researchers, clinicians and patients engage in team building exercises and activities to advance design innovation,” says Thompson.

Institutions that will be represented at PCD-IS include IFMA, Clemson University, Harvard Medical School, Fordham University and  Stanford University’s “d. school,” to name a few, along with multiple hospital systems, major companies and design leaders. Additionally, the Facility Guidelines Institute, authors of the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities (a book that has been adopted as code in most states) will be on site to collect information as they prepare the 2018 edition.

This year, the Institute has begun a new form of outreach in which tangible results of its annual design competition will be gifted directly to facilities that can put them to clinical use. In this spirit, one of the event’s highlights include the unveiling of the Patient Experience Simulation Lab (PESL) model designed by ERDMAN, winners of the 2014 Family-Centered Cancer Care Design Competition (http://www.ifpcd.org/2014-design-competition). This model will be unveiled at MUSC's Hollings Cancer Center, the largest academic cancer center and only National Cancer Institute in South Carolina. It will be on exhibit throughout the Summit.  After three days of intensive sessions in this learning lab, it will be turned over to MUSC for its use.  In addition, the Institute for Patient-Centered Design will make a   contribution to MUSC’s pediatric oncology program with proceeds from the summit. The lab will be open to the public on Tues, the 29th from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Parking is available in the Jonathan Lucas Street Garage.

"This will create an educational opportunity that is not available at most institutions and hopefully have a lasting effect on those involved," says Dr. Rozanne Wille, the mother of little "Hendo" whose battle with childhood cancer inspired the design competition. As a juror of the competition, Dr. Wille continues to advise the project, and she serves on the Summit's faculty to share her experience as a parent and a physician with attendees.

There is limited space available to register for the summit, or interested parties are invited to join the Institute’s free Patient-Centered Design Alliance to get live updates from the summit and opportunities to connect with the summit's innovation teams. For more info, log onto www.ifpcd.org.

About the Institute for Patient-Centered Design

The Institute for Patient-Centered Design (http://www.ifpcd.org/), Inc. is a nonprofit organization that educates health facility designers and stakeholders on the needs of patients, families and clinicians in the health care environment.  It is the first design related organization to bring patients into live simulation activities at educational events to inspire better accommodations for patients and families. The Institute demonstrates its commitment to improve the patient experience by capturing actual stories from patients and families, reminding designers of the impact their creations have on real life experiences. In an effort to improve patient outcomes, the Institute has designated part of the proceeds from the Patient-Centered Design Innovation Summit to be contributed to the pediatric oncology programs at MUSC.
