Housing Counseling Agency's Ex Director Named To CFPB Advisory Board

TAMPA, Fla. - Sept. 25, 2015 - PRLog -- Sylvia Alvarez, Executive Director of Housing and Education Alliance, a HUD approved housing counseling agency named to the CFPB Consumer Advisory Board.

Friday, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced the appointment of consumer finance experts from across the country to serve on three advisory boards.

“These advisory bodies play a crucial role in ensuring that the Bureau is addressing the wide variety of perspectives in the consumer financial marketplace,” said CFPB Director Cordray. “The new additions we are announcing bring a range of expertise and experience that will help inform our work going forward.”

The newly appointed board and council members include experts in consumer protection, financial services, community development, fair lending, civil rights, and consumer financial products or services

“I am humbled and honored by this appointment and I hope to bring my years of experience in housing, real estate, mortgage lending and housing counseling to this board to help them continue to do the very valuable work they do,” said Sylvia Alvarez. “They have helped bring justice and accountability to the financial marketplace and help insure that those most fragile in our society have a voice and a champion for their financial protection.”

New members to the Consumer Advisory Board will serve three-year terms and new members to the Community Bank and Credit Union Advisory Councils will serve a two year term.

Sylvia Alvarez is the founder and Executive Director of the Housing and Education Alliance a HUD approved housing counseling agency serving over 45,000 Tampa Bay area residents since 2002. She has over 25 years of experience in real estate, mortgage lending, affordable housing and housing counseling. She coauthored a book entitled “The American Nightmare: Strategies for Preventing, Surviving and Overcoming Foreclosure.” The book was endorsed by Freddie Mac and the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals, translated into Spanish and used by consumers and HUD housing counselors throughout the country. Through her leadership her agency has received much recognition and many awards including the coveted "Non Profit of the Year" through PBS's national program the Be More Awards. Sylvia has served on several boards and committees including Chairing HUD’s Committee to End Homelessness for Families and Children. Sylvia is a highly respected advocate of housing and has been invited to take part in meetings with US Treasury, HUD, Department of Agriculture and high level staff at the White House.

Sylvia works tirelessly on behalf of hard working families and their housing issues.
