BARNSTAPLE, U.K. - Sept. 21, 2015 - PRLog -- Mermaids are not just in films and story books. They are coming to a swimming pool near you!

A Devon company is offering children, and adults, the chance to swim like a mermaid, with its new ‘mermaiding’ classes taught by qualified swimming instructors.  Mermaids UK has been set up by Lisa Bousted and her 21 year old daughter Charlotte. Based in Barnstaple, Lisa already runs the successful Aquarius Swimschool which teaches swimming at venues across North Devon.

Mermaids UK offers classes teaching children and adults how to swim safely while wearing a mermaid tail. The tails, made from chlorine resistant lycra, fit over the legs and are worn up to the waist. Mermaids UK also provides training for qualified swimming teachers who want to teach mermaiding around the UK.

The new business represents a dream come true for Charlotte. “I have always loved mermaids, and when I was little I really wanted to be a mermaid! They are such graceful creatures.  Now, after teaching swimming for several years, I can combine my love of teaching with my love for mermaids! People just seem to adore these mermaid tails.  Whenever we have mermaiding classes, everyone on the poolside stops to watch, and the children all want to have a go.”

Mermaids UK has just launched its website www.mermaidsswimuk.co.uk with details of its classes and ‘mermaid experience’ sessions - one off taster sessions giving swimmers a chance to try out a mermaid tail for 1 or 2 hours and have photographs taken. Also being developed is a Mer-cise Fitness programme. The website has a range of mermaid and merman tails for sale, in different sizes and colours. The selection includes a ‘shark grey’ tail which is popular with boys, and which Mermaids UK specially asked its suppliers in China to develop.

“This is an exciting new way to enjoy the water. Wearing a mermaid tail is great fun for children and adults,” explained Lisa. “The tails are colourful and glamourous.  The kids just love swimming in them, both girls and boys. As well as being fun, mermaiding is also beneficial for you as the exercises undertaken help build your core muscles and using your core is needed for many other types of exercise and daily activities, which helps create stability and protects the back from injury.”

The new business has been set up as the trend for mermaiding spreads around the world. However there have been some concerns about the safety of swimming while wearing mermaid tails. Lisa says that when setting up Mermaids UK, safety was uppermost in her mind.

“Safety is our highest priority at all times. This is why we only use qualified swimming instructors to run our classes. The team behind developing the Mermaids UK programme are not only qualified instructors but are Swimming Tutors involved in delivering educational training courses. They also have experience teaching synchro, diving, free diving and dance, and providing personal training.  In addition, our programme of classes has been written specifically for the use in the UK. We do not allow non-swimmers to use the mermaid tails or children under the age of 6, and we also send out safety advice with all the mermaid tails that we sell online.”
