BizLibrary joins Ready and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in promoting National Preparedness Month. This nationwide effort aims to encourage households, business and communities to prepare and plan for unforeseen emergencies.

An effective emergency plan should include extra water on hand, canned food, a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher. Many households and businesses also prepare an evacuation plan.

Due to National Preparedness Month, BizLibrary is spotlighting an Emergency Preparedness & Response video to help promote emergency plans. Click here (http://www.bizlibrary.com/news-and-events/weekly-video-highlight.aspx) to watch the Weekly Video Highlight.

Here are four ways to prepare for severe weather events and other disasters:

Inspect the roof: Determine if there are any weaknesses that could be damaged during a storm and repair them.
Trim trees: Remove weak branches that could easily be thrown against windows due to high winds.
Test smoke alarms: Check your smoke alarms on a monthly basis to make sure they are working.
Create defensible space: Create a buffer zone around your home or business by removing any combustible materials close to your building.

Visit FEMA.gov for more information about how to protect yourself and your family from a natural disaster.

Quote attributable to MaryAnn Tierney, Regional Administrator, FEMA:

“People often ask how they can help out first responders in an emergency, well one of the best ways is to be self-sufficient following an emergency, that takes pressure off of responders and they can focus on the most critical situations. Another great way to get prepared for an emergency is to get involved in your community. There are many different organizations that you can get involved with, such as Community Emergency Response Teams, Citizen Corps, and the Medical Reserve Corps.”
