PORTLAND, Ore. - Sept. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- Finnish startup Circular Devices OY, the company behind PuzzlePhone, will present in four sessions at the Green Electronics Council’s Emerging Green Conference about its latest developments and the importance of design to the circular economy. The PuzzlePhone concept is to maximize product lifecycles and minimize waste through a modular mobile device comprised of three easily replaceable and customizable parts.

CEO Alejandro Santacreu will participate alongside representatives from Hewlett-Packard, HP Labs and Electronic Recyclers International during the three-day conference’s opening keynote panel, “Electronics in a Circular Economy.” On Wednesday, Sept. 23, the second day of the Conference, Santacreu and Circular Devices Strategic Design Advisor Tapani Jokinen will lead a 90-minute session titled “PuzzlePhone: Design to Last.” During the session, Santacreu and Jokinen will update attendees on the PuzzlePhone project and the PuzzlePhone Open Standard, a complete platform to develop and manufacture compatible devices with an extended product life.

Santacreu will also be a panel presenter in the “Business Models for a Circular Economy” session. In addition, Jokinen will participate in a session called “Extending Product Use-Life.”

“Current trends in mobile phones are not aligned with a sustainable longer life,” said Circular Devices CEO Alejandro Santacreu. “There is a need for designs that allow a simple way to extend the product lifecycle allowing easy reparability, upgradeability and reuse beyond the main primary purpose.”

In cooperation with leading global conferences, Emerging Green is the premiere 2015 gathering of technology leaders to discuss the advances, challenges and future of sustainable electronics. With more than two dozen sessions and high-level keynotes, experts and thought leaders will focus on the unique hurdles and opportunities that electronics pose to a circular economy, from material selection and supply-chain social issues to closing the loop and emerging technologies.

“Modular design can have a direct impact both on the sustainability of electronics and on the way we as a society use our devices,” said Scott Davis, Interim CEO of the Green Electronics Council, organizers of the Emerging Green Conference. “We are pleased to have PuzzlePhone participate in the Conference to provide an update on their organization and to help shape the conversation about the role of electronics in a circular economy.”

PuzzlePhone is the first modular smartphone focused on sustainability. It has three easily replaceable and customizable modules: “The Brain” (main electronics), “The Heart” (battery) and “The Spine” (screen). This reduced and minimal number of modules allows upgrading or replacing the hardware as easy as with the software. PuzzlePhone works to the mobile industry standard to enable resource efficiency as well as platforms for hardware innovation to show that the mobile industry could be both ecologically and socially sustainable.
