Georgia's ports keep going strong, with Savannah as the fastest-growing major port in the nation. Georgia's ports, which include Savannah and Brunswick, handled record total tonnage and container traffic, moving 29.4 million tons of cargo -up 8 percent- and 3.14 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs), up by 6.3 percent in FY 2014 (July 2013 -July 2014) compared to previous fiscal year. Georgia's ports also reached an all-time high in container cargo in the summer of 2014, a 19.2 percent increase over the previous year. The Port of Savannah was the second busiest U.S. container port for the export of American goods by containerized tonnage in FY 2013. It also handled 8 percent of the U.S. containerized cargo volume and 10.9 percent of all U.S. containerized exports in FY 2013.

Future looks bright for Georgia ports with further connections to the global markets, especially Asia, via the widening of the Panama Canal and Savannah's river deepening project set for completion in 2017. China and Hong Kong account for 32 percent of tradeat Georgia's ports. In fact, with 400 weekly services to Asia, the Savannah port hosts more weekly services to that continent than any other East Coast port.
