The Quality Parks Master Naturalist certification program offered for the Carmans River (Fall 2015) will benefit professionals, academic students, residents and anyone seeking to become more familiar with Long Island flora, fauna, habitats, and conservation practices. What? Quality Parks was recently awarded a Peconic Estuary Grant to include additional information on nutrient pollution reduction, climate change and sea level rise, preserving and restoring landscapes and stormwater runoff reduction via green infrastructure techniques for the certification program entitled Quality Parks Master Naturalist. Why? Master Naturalists continue to take part in the active study, conservation and preservation of open space. The Quality Parks Master Naturalist certification program is designed to develop a cadre of citizen conservation stewards dedicated to nature education, land stewardship, and community service on behalf of Long Island’s natural areas. Where? The Carmans River Watershed includes the 10 mile Carmans River which flows from Middle Island, NY towards the inlet reopened by Hurricane Sandy. Included within the Long Island Pine Barrens, it’s one largest rivers on Long Island. Surrounded by historic communities, it travels through Suffolk County parklands and the USFWS Wertheim Refuge. When? Registration for the Fall 2015 is available today for the October-January program, timed to include a peak season fall foliage trip along the Carmans River. Tuition is reasonably priced, with early registration and membership benefits. How? Since 2013, participants have contributed hundreds of relevant service hours to dozens of cooperating organizations, groups, and individuals, who have each contributed resources and qualified instructors.
