LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sept. 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann was joined by Tom Easterday, executive vice president of Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA), and Mark Newman, executive director of the Indiana Office of Tourism Development (IOTD), to announce that Subaru is the official vehicle provider for the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay caravan. The announcement was made at SIA’s headquarters in Lafayette today, exactly one year out from the start of the torch relay.

“What a perfect way to kickoff our one-year countdown to the start of the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay,” commented Ellspermann. “This is another fine example of Subaru’s commitment to Indiana and it is a pleasure to welcome them as our partners in this celebratory and unifying event. The Subaru vehicles will support our torch caravan and ensure a fun and safe journey along the 2,300 mile torch relay route.”

Subaru will make 10 vehicles available to IOTD. The fleet of Subaru vehicles will escort the torch and transport personnel and equipment on the 92-county journey. The vehicles will also be used to support promotional activities and marketing efforts before the relay begins. Subaru will provide the popular Outback and Legacy models, which will be wrapped in specially-designed Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay decals. The vehicles will be returned to Subaru at the conclusion of the torch relay in October, 2016.

“On behalf of all the associates of Subaru of Indiana Automotive, we are very excited to be the caravan sponsor of the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay,” said Easterday. “As an Indiana company that employs nearly 4,000 Hoosiers and has several suppliers located across Indiana, it’s only fitting that we sponsor this effort to honor our state’s heritage and inspire our fellow Hoosiers. We look forward to seeing Subaru Legacys and Outbacks built at SIA in Lafayette, Indiana, traveling through all 92 counties as part of the 2016 Bicentennial celebration.”

The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay will touch each of Indiana’s 92 counties during the 2,300 mile journey across the state. Developed by IOTD, the relay is patterned after the Olympic Torch Relay and is designed to connect Hoosiers across the state and nation with their home state during the bicentennial year. The relay begins in Corydon on September 9, 2016.

“Subaru’s support of the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay is a terrific partnership that binds a great Indiana company with the premiere event of our bicentennial celebration,” said Newman. “We are thankful for Subaru’s support and look forward to having them with us for every mile of the torch relay.”

Additionally, a blog and social media campaign began today to promote the torch relay. “92 Counties, 92 Days” will feature each of Indiana’s counties one by one, promoting each county’s history, as well as places to visit and things to do in the county. The campaign will highlight the counties in their order on the torch relay, beginning with Harrison County today and finishing with Marion County on December 10, one day before Statehood Day and the beginning of Indiana’s bicentennial year. To follow the campaign, visit INTorchRelay on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Torchbearer nominations are currently open. The public is encouraged to recognize Hoosiers who demonstrate exceptional public service, excellence in their profession, acts of heroism or volunteer service to their neighborhood, community, region or state. The torch will be primarily transported by people, passing the flame from torch bearer to torch bearer. The relay will also employ other modes of conveyance that are symbolic of the history and heritage of Indiana. The torchbearer nomination form can be found by visiting http://www.in.gov/ibc/torchrelay/.
