Whether you're moving across town or across the country, relocating is a big event. At times it could seem overwhelming, but we can help you stay on top of all the details to consider. Use this checklist as a tool to get started.

Take the first steps

•  Visit www.relocationessentials.com to learn about housing, cost of living, schools, employment opportunities and more

•  Determine whether it makes more sense to rent or buy in your new location.

•  Get estimates from moving companies to help you decide whether to hire professionals.

•  Learn how to safely move your pets.

•  Store important documents (for example, your will, marriage or divorce papers, mortgage, financial documents, birth certificates) and carry them with you to your new home.

•  Contact your utility companies to give them a disconnect date.

•  At least two weeks before you move in, arrange for new utilities to be connected.

•  Get copies of transcripts or arrange for a transfer of children's school records.

•  Visit USPS.com or your local post office to change your address. Also change your address on credit accounts, subscriptions and IRS records.

•  Locate a new physician, dentist and other health care professionals, and set up consultations. Find the location of the nearest hospital and urgent care center.

•  If moving to a new state, get a new driver's license and change your vehicle registrations.

Make financial moves

•  Transfer your bank accounts and rent a safe-deposit box at a new bank, if necessary.

•  After your new accounts are open, close your previous bank accounts and transfer the contents of your safe-deposit box.

•  Create or update a monthly budget.

•  If changing jobs, talk with the benefits department about your employer-sponsored retirement plan before you move.

•  If you're moving to a new state, review your tax-free investment options because these can vary by state.

•  Talk to your financial advisor about continuing your relationship from your new location. Any life change – like relocation – is a good time to review your portfolio and financial goals.

Prepare for the unexpected

•  If you're changing jobs, consider your individual or new employer-sponsored insurance options. This may include life, health and disability insurance.

•  Discuss with your insurance provider coverage for your cars, items in storage and your residence to make sure you're covered during your move.

Consider tax implications

If you're moving to a different state, discuss the following with your tax professional, if appropriate:

•  Moving and job search expenses

•  Capital gains on a home sale

•  Your tax bracket based on your income from your new job

•  Any differences in tax laws by state
