Interstate SignWays Contributes to Successful Completion of Arizona DOT Road Project

For the sign rehabilitation and replacement at crossroad, frontage road, and mainline locations.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Sept. 8, 2015 - PRLog -- Interstate SignWays, America’s largest guide sign manufacturer and a leader of the industry since 1959, is proud to have contributed to the successful completion of a noteworthy interstate road project in Tucson, Arizona.

With the draft 2016-2020 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) funding projected at almost $6 billion, and multiple proposed and active P3 projects underway, the outlook appears optimistic for Arizona’s infrastructure system.

The 5-year plan for improvement and maintenance to the state’s 60K+ miles of roadway includes the typical scope performed by specialty contractors: roadway signage, traffic signalization, streetlighting, and intelligent transportation.

The Arizona climate is, at times, challenging to contractors.  Summer temperatures can reach 116° with high levels of humidity.  Additionally, the “monsoon” season begins in July and extends through September.   Blowing dust storms in the afternoon, followed by muddy rain, are the norm.

For the Tucson project, AJP Electric, Inc. installed over 28,000 square feet of signage manufactured by Interstate SignWays.

The aluminum substrate was a mix of extrusion and flat sheet, depending upon the installation location.  Aluminum edge molding was applied to frame the extruded signs.  Per Arizona DOT specifications, the sign face required 3M™ Diamond Grade™ DG³ Reflective Sheeting.   DG³ is highly reflective, and ideal for applications where no luminaires will be utilized.  3M™ Premium Protective Overlay Film, an anti-graffiti film, is frequently required for Arizona sign installations, but was not specified for this project.

Inclement weather featuring rain and wind storms posed constraints, but the field personnel of AJP Electric rose to the challenge, putting in long weeks, and always using caution and safety as their highest priority.  Tucson’s Interstate 10 is a majorly traveled highway leading through the city, thus installation to complete the mainline activities was limited to night-time hours,  between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.  The coordination of heavy haul loads, with some widths extending to 25 feet, presented yet another constraint.  In spite of these obstacles, AJP Electric was able to complete the I-10 portion of the project without requiring any mainline closures, even through the highway’s 2-lane width configuration areas.  On State Route 210, the sign replacement was completed with a week of night-time full freeway closures.  The combination of night work, and closing a single direction of travel at a time, was far less  a hindrance to traffic  than alternative daytime lane restrictions.

Interstate SignWays facilitated installation for AJP Electric by loading uncrated, fully assembled signs onto Interstate-provided A-frame trailers, in the order of the planned installation.  Deliveries were appropriately staged, and trailers remained with AJP Electric for project use.  A typical rotation provided by Interstate is three trailers, which this project required.
