10 Speed and 11 Speed Transmissions are Comming - Transmission Repair Shops Must Adapt

HILLSBOROUGH, Fla. - Sept. 6, 2015 - PRLog -- ZF transmissions in the 90’s had 4 speed 4hp transmissions.  Soon after, the 5 speed 5hp versions became the sought after replacements.  Then the amazing 6 speed 6hp versions seemed like they would be the new generation.  Here in the 2010’s, they have developed 8 speed 8hp, and the 9 speed transmissions.  ZF, also known as the ZF Friedrichshafen AG, is abbreviated for Zahnradfabrik in German or Gear Factory in English is a transmission manufacturer used by many auto manufacturers for their transmissions.  Audi, Volkswagen, BMW, Porsche, Jaguar, Land Rover, Bentley, Dodge / Chrysler/ Jeep, Acura, Fiat, Maserati and even Rolls Royce all have used or currently use ZF transmissions for some of their models.

As all auto manufacturers keep thinking bigger, GM and Ford are now coming out with 10 speed and 11 speed transmissions. Ford’s 10R transmission has 6 under-drives, 1 direct drive, 3 over-drives and 4 planetary sets.  This is quite fascinating when considering the potential of speed and fuel economy to be achieved with these new designs of transmissions.

With these new horizons of transmissions here, it will be interesting to see if other auto manufacturers and transmission manufacturers will adapt to the more speed transmission concepts or continue to develop the CVT transmissions that are continuous velocity transmissions that have no speeds, but are simply programmed to mimic the shift points.  No matter which transmission your vehicle has, transmission repairs will be the inedible. It will also be interesting to see if transmission shops will adapt to the new upcoming breeds of transmissions of the futuristic vehicles.
