Kansas City mom uses Kickstarter to self-publish her first children's book, A Boy Named Love

Overland Park, KS, Sept. 1 - Mom of two, writer, and former software designer Annie Sorensen self-published her first children's book, A Boy Named Love, in August. The book, beneficial for kids of all ages but specifically for those three to eight, is now available on Amazon.com in paperback and hardcover editions.

A Boy Named Love features two main characters; Love and his best friend, his dog Sam. Love struggles to be accepted by his classmates. He has a unique personality and confides in Sam one day that he wants to be different. When his peers start treating him better, he thinks the changes he made are a good thing, until something happens to Sam that threatens to change everything. The book concludes with a heartwarming ending that will make kids smile and adults appreciative of the relatable, positive storyline.

Initially considered a pet project, Annie wasn't interested in shelling out several thousand dollars to pay a professional illustrator for the book. The project stalled for the better part of a year before her husband convinced her to look into the crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter. After two months of planning, including hours of research on how to properly pre-market a Kickstarter campaign, and the making of a short but powerful professional promotional video that headlined the project, the campaign launched in mid November 2014. 171 people pledged and 28 days later Annie's goal of $10,000 was reached - and surpassed - in the final hours. The successful campaign was a study in the power of networking, and how years of work in cultivating an online and offline network can provide tangible benefits when needed.

Annie made the decision to take advantage of CreateSpace, Amazon.com's self-publishing arm, to make her first book a reality. It has proven to be the perfect platform to match Sorensen’s style as an author and a businesswoman, allowing her to have creative control over the publishing process.
