Are high heels a risk to suffer varicose veins?

NEW YORK - Sept. 1, 2015 - PRLog -- When we talk about varicose veins there are a lot of beliefs that are taken as true even when there is no scientific evidence to support it; one of the most common is the association between the use of high heels and varicose veins.

Before going far away with the analysis of this asseveration, it is important to know that the varicose vein is not a single illness but a wide spectrum of sickness affecting the venous system from the smaller capillaries known as "spider veins" to the most dramatic and severe cases of perforating and saphenous veins insufficiency associated to varicose ulcers.

Due to its wide spectrum, there is not a single cause nor a single risk factor for varicose veins, instead there are several causes that may contribute to the development and worseness of varicose veins, even more when two or more are present at the same time.

The most common risk factors are genetics, overweight, sedentarism, hormones consumption and tobacco; it is evident that high heels are not included on this list, then, why is it common to ear that the use of this kind of shoes is associated with varicosities?

Well, even if high heels are not a straight cause of varicose veins, the constant use of this kind of shoes could have an indirect contribution by strengthening other risk factors; for example; is it possible to be an active, non sedentary person when using a 6" heels all day long, every day? the most reasonable answer is not; in fact, most women try to avoid long walks and stairs when using high heels, therefore this shoes will maximize the sedentarism, a known risk factor for varicose veins.

On the other hand, there are more severe harms to the legs with the daily use of high heels which goes far away from only the veins; the most common problems are on the bones of the feet which suffer deformation due to the overload and atrophy of the calf muscles because of their limit mobility when using high heels.

This atrophy may lead with time to the worseness of varicosities while the calf muscles works as a "venous pump" impulsing the blood forward to the hearth, so when these muscles become atrophic, the effectiveness of the venous pump declines and this could be associated with worseness of varicosities if they are present.

From this point of view the high heels will not directly contribute to varicose veins but will maximize other risk factors (if present) for varicosities, thus prevention is the key word on this situation.

It is insane to think that high heels will be banned; despite of it, it is highly recommended the shoes rotation, which means that high heels must not be used daily but alternating them with other kind of shoes in order to avoid harms to the legs; on the other hand is very important to keep good control of all other risk factors associated to varicose veins, keeping in mind that varicosities may appear even without the use of high heels if these factors are not properly controlled.
