ASCOT, U.K. - Sept. 1, 2015 - PRLog -- Lack of sleep is much more influential than even smoking in the liklihood of you catching a cold or virus this winter, says a new study. Other lifestyle factors and even aspects like income and education are also second to sleep in how likely you will be to get the sneezes this fall.

In the study, by the University of California and published in the journal Sleep, 164 volunteers were studied over a period of 2 months. Researchers monitored their sleeping patterns, alchohol intake, smoking habits and stress levels. They were then deliberately injected with a cold virus, then monitored for the next two weeks.

Those who slept for 6 hours or less were found to be more than 4 times as likely to catch the cold than those who got closer to the recommended 7 or 8 hours a night.

A similar study by the University of Surrey in the UK also found that lack of sleep is really harmful. They recorded over 800 potentially damaging gene mutations that occur due to lack of sleep.
