What Your Kitten Will Need

Your kitten will need a variety of basic items when he or she comes home for the first time. Below you will find a list to help you get started.

The box should be large enough that your kitten can easily turn around while inside. One litter box is enough for one kitten. However, if you have multiple cats, the rule of thumb is one litter box per animal, plus one extra litter box. So if you have two kittens, you need three litter boxes. Cats can be territorial and do not like sharing when it comes to litter boxes. Having an extra litter box will help solve any potential behavioral issues before they occur.
Litter: There are two different types of litter available: non-clumping and clumping.

Non-clumping litter is made from natural clay and it requires more cleaning than clumping litter. The litter box should be cleaned daily and the litter needs to be replaced at least once a week.
Clumping litter makes for easy clean up. The litter box should be cleaned daily and the litter needs to be replaced every two weeks.

Using a carrier is the safest way to travel with your kitten or cat. Most kittens and cats do not enjoy traveling in a carrier, but this ensures their safety. Being in a carrier can be a stressful situation for your kitten, so familiarizing them with the carrier will help when it is time to travel.
Collar: Always use a "breakaway" collar, which will prevent choking if he or she gets caught on a fence, branch, or anything in your home.
ID Tag: An ID tag is the easiest way of identifying your kitten or cat and should provide important information such as the pet's name, your phone number, and your city or town.
Food: It is best if you continue to feed your kitten the food that he or she is currently eating. If you decide to switch the food, wean them off of their current diet and introduce the new food over a course of a week.
Food and Water Dishes: There is no right or wrong option when selecting food and water dishes, but stainless steel dishes are recommended. Bacteria can grow in any food or water dish, however stainless steel will harbor less bacteria than other materials. They are also unbreakable, unlike ceramic dishes, and will not slide around on the floor, unlike plastic dishes. All food and water dishes should be washed every day to deter bacteria growth.
Food Storage: Many pet foods are sold in paper bags and boxes. Your pet's food will be kept fresh in a storage container, plus bugs and rodents will not be able to contaminate it.
Cat Toys: Always supervise your kitten when they are playing with any toy.
Cat Scratchers: Having a scratching post is a great way to deter your kitten from scratching up your personal belongings.
