“The time spent doing things with family teach children social skills that will carry over into their adult years as they raise their own families and become members of society,” continued Ghigliotty.  Here are three ways to create fun and educational family gatherings.

Have a Family History Night – Kids learn about history in school, but the idea that their own families have a history can be lost on them if they never hear about it. Gather all of the available family members near and far together and have everyone take a turn talking about an event that happened to them, or that they remember hearing about from their elders, and pass along the family history to the next generation.

The stories shared can be about how grandparents met, where they grew up, events that happened to parents in school. Every little story helps build a stronger self-image for a child that gives them the tools to succeed in life. Creating a time for family history helps children face the challenges they will encounter in life, and also helps them understand the importance of maintaining the values they are taught to preserve their family image.

Set Up a Game Time – It doesn’t matter what type of games people play during family time. They can be active sporty type games outside or quiet, fun games indoors at night. Games do more than just create an exciting, fun environment for people to share together, they also teach young family members how to play by the rules, how to get along with others when competing and that the activity is fun no matter whether they win or lose.
