Follow on Google News | That Wonder Boy reaches for NYC with crowdfunding campaignScheduled to perform in world's largest solo theater festival October 30, 31
By: That Wonder Boy "It's gratifying when a show is recognized as a winner," says Executive Producer Dennis Babcock, "Unfortunately that doesn't immediately translate into generating sufficient funds to take it to the next level. We're scheduled for this wonderful Festival in New York, but we're going to need help to get there." Taking the show to New York is an important step, allowing it to be seen by key presenters and national and international press, as well as by a new and diverse audience. Performances are on Friday, October 30 (9:00 PM) and Saturday, October 31 (2:00 PM) at Theatre Row, 410 West 42nd Street, New York, NY. The Indiegogo campaign seeks $20,000 to cover travel costs for Stromberg and the crew, the reworking of the show to fit the particular venue, shipping of set and equipment, rental or purchase of additional equipment, and smaller items such as marketing materials, participation fees, insurance and administrative costs. The campaign runs through September 30. Campaign "perks" include show-related items such as bumper stickers, flying discs, photos from Stromberg's hilarious family slideshow collection, and tickets to the performances. That Wonder Boy is an exploration of life and art through the eyes of a youngster who "overcame a happy childhood to become a comedic artist." It begins with a flying baby and soars on a creative flight through Stromberg's world of laughter, joy and wonder. "Stromberg is a bit like a cross between Bob Newhart and Garrison Keillor," says the St. Paul Pioneer Press, and the Minneapolis Star Tribune confirms, "Stromberg tells terrific stories." Talkinbroadway.com calls the show "90 minutes or so of sheer delight." That Wonder Boy is directed by Risa Brainin, an award-winning regional theater director who is currently Chair of the Department of Theater and Dance at UC Santa Barbara. Brainin formerly served on the artistic staff at the Guthrie Theater and has directed for numerous theaters around the country. Music and soundscape are by composer/musical director/actor Michael Pearce Donley (also composer and co-author of Triple Espresso--a highly caffeinated comedy); set and costumes are by Nayna Ramey, who has worked extensively in regional theater across the country and whose credits include over 60 productions at Chanhassan Dinner Theatres. Lighting is by Michael Klaers, whose credits include the Guthrie Theater, Mixed Blood, Great Lakes Theater Festival, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, and Triple Espresso; technical sound design is by John Markiewicz of Audio Logic Systems, based in Bloomington, MN. The United Solo Theatre Festival, now in its 6th season, is the world's largest solo theater festival, involving 150 productions from 6 countries.
