Rising concerns of modern cities and smart ways of handling them

 
CHANDIGARH, India - Aug. 24, 2015 - PRLog -- It is estimated that by 2030 Indian cities will contribute about 75% of the nation’s GDP. With the population exploding in the cities, the cities face a series of challenges due to the rapid urbanization.  This includes increased requirement of government services, electricity & water demand, increased solid waste, traffic, safety concerns, sewerage management, etc. These are putting both the city and its authorities under tremendous pressure to meet the ever growing requirement of the citizens. Some of the world’s smart cities which host the happiest citizens have identified that these challenges can be overcome with the appropriate use of technology. Technology will be the key enabler for improving efficiency and capacity of city services. Technology will also equip the city managers with enough information to make informed decisions and enable real time governance.

The Indian government has identified the benefits of making the existing cities smart to improve their citizens’ overall quality of life. The central government will be spending on 100 cities throughout India and have launched the smart city challenge for cities to contest for the smart city tag.

A two day high profile conference has been organized by Nispana Innovative Platforms to bring in global knowledge and to discuss on various concepts of smart cities, the involvement of technology, governance, citizen’s role, etc. Titled the “Sustainable Smart Cities India” 2015, the conference is scheduled on the 3& 4 September 2015 at the Vivanta by Taj – M.G. Road Bengaluru.

Mr. R. K. Gautham, Head for Operations, Sustainability Excellence at Cushman & Wakefield states that “digital mapping of the urban landscape, both above & below the ground, is a key to monitoring & controlling buildings & utilities in a smart city context while making technology an absolute necessity for smart cities. Mr. Zohar Sharon – Chief Knowledge Officer, Tel Aviv Yafo Municipality highlights on opportunities and benefits of engaging, involving and connecting the city residents directly to the municipal departments. While women contribute to half of our community, a smart city needs to provide safety for women in public spaces and also improve their quality of life. A session chaired by Ms. Anju Pandey from UN Women will focus on ‘Engendering urban planning and urban spaces’

98 cities have already nominated themselves for Smart City mission in time after detailed evaluation of all urban local bodies in each state and UT is a remarkable achievement. "This is against the past trend of lethargy and casual approach. This reflects the new sense of urgency on the part of states and UTs (http://www.business-standard.com/search?type=news&q=Uts) to make a difference to our urban landscape," Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu (http://www.business-standard.com/search?type=news&q=M...) told PTI.

With the smart cities challenge heating up as 20 cities will be selected for the central programme in 2015, every city is contesting against each other to be on top of the race. Proactive cities like Tumukuru, Shivamogga, Puducherry, Mangaluru, Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Davangere, Salem, Tiruchirappali, Coimbatore, etc, along with 40 other commissioners and mayors from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Telangana state, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Kolkata, etc who are targeting the smart city tag have already reserved their seats at the “Sustainable Smart Cities India” conference scheduled on the 3-4 September 2015 at the Vivanta by Taj, M.G Road, Bengaluru. While the cities get smart it’s very essential for the citizens to get smarter and the future of India seems bright with the smart cities mission bringing in technology into the cities and the Digital India programme focuses on digital empowerment of citizens.
