HABEY Releases Lego-like HIO-EMB-1200 modular Freescale i.MX6 Embedded Linux Board

Innovative single-board computer design to scale from prototypes to products

LOS ANGELES - Aug. 20, 2015 - PRLog -- HABEY USA, a leading provider of embedded boards, industrial computers and building blocks for Internet of Things (IoT), today introduced a new modular embedded Linux board running a Freescale i.MX6 processor base on ARM Cortex-A9 architecture. The HIO-EMB-1200 is part of the HIO Project, a development effort backed by HABEY to create expandable modular embedded computer building blocks that can be used across the entire product development cycle – from evaluation, development, prototyping to finish product.

Powered by open source embedded Linux distribution with Yocto Project and Freescale’s top-of-the-line performance application processor, this modular embedded board targets a new generation of HMI (Human Machine Interface) touch computers, intelligent gateways, industrial, office and smart home automation applications requiring versatile I/O interfaces, modular design, ultra-small footprint and industrial-grade stability and reliability.

Measuring just 72mm x 85mm, the HIO-EMB-1200 is 20% smaller than the tiny PICO-ITX form factor and is designed to fit in a 2-gang electrical wall outlet box.  Unlike the System on Module (SOM) approach,  the HIO-EMB-1200 (core-board) is a fully functional single-board computer with its own power input, on-board RAM, Flash storage, HDMI, digital audio, USB ports and SD expansion. Its unique modular design with eight 50-pin female headers on the top and bottom of the board allows 3-dimensional expansions by adding modules like building Lego bricks.  The board can be powered with a 5V DC input or by one of the modules connecting to it, allowing power inputs from different sources.

“Makers and developers can start their prototypes and application software rapidly by using the core-board (HIO-EMC-1200) and pairing with one or more modules.  They can also develop their own modules to meet specific application or power requirements.” said Bin Lin, founder of the HIO Project.  “By designing with this modular core-board, which incorporates essential circuitry and most of the high frequency components, including the audio codec and Ethernet PHY on board, developers can focus on what they are good at and significantly reduce the challenges, time and investments on building custom boards, modules or carrier boards for their final products.  They can also take the advantage of Freescale’s power-efficient i.MX6 processors, long life cycle support and our modular embedded Linux support with Yocto Project”

To showcase this Lego-like modular embedded Linux board design, Habey launched a Kickstarter campagin https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1696745118/7-wallpad-the-open-source-modular-touch-computer that features a POE ready 7” modular in-wall touch computer based on the HIO-EMB-1200 core-board and two other modules.  The core-board, Starter Kit, POE Kit, modules and a other development kits with LCD touch panel are available for order now at HABEY’s HIO Project website (www.hioproject.org).

About HIO Project

HIO Project is a development effort backed by HABEY to create expandable modular hardware platforms for building embedded systems and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.  The goal is to provide affordable embedded computer building blocks that can be used across the entire product development cycle – from evaluation, development, prototyping to finish product.  It is based on the bottom up approach, enabling developers to build a custom embedded computer tailored to their applications starting with the minimal building block and adding modules as needed. http://www.hioproject.org
