INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. - Aug. 20, 2015 - PRLog -- North Carolina poet Kym Gordon Moore is pleased to announce the second anniversary celebration of poetry open mic, at the Indian Trail Cultural Arts Center (ITCAC), on Saturday September 12, 2015. Festivities will begin with a “Meet, Eat & Mingle” on the grounds of the center, at 5:45p.m. Open mic performances will take place from 6:30 to 8:30p.m.

“It’s hard to believe that two years of poetry open mic has transpired so quickly,” says Moore. “When I approached Susan Didier, Indian Trail Community Development Specialist during the summer of 2013, I asked if they offered open mic readings. After a conversation about the possibility of introducing a poetry event to the community, since there was not a venue that consistently offered open mic readings in the area, I volunteered to help showcase our first poetry event on September 28, 2013. All readings are F-R-E-E and scheduled on the second Saturday of each month."

Moore went on to say, "Susan and I didn’t want our poetry open mic experience to be monotonous, boring, elusive or disparaging. Such emotions were a turn off for me and several friends who occasionally attended various open mics. I envisioned an atmosphere that challenged the traditional approach to poetry, by making these events fun, comfortable, educational and engaging. Susan and I agreed on this style and I truly believe this is why our platform has been so successful. Each month since we kicked off our first open mic, we have given participants a theme to challenge their creativity when composing poetry, short stories, art or music. This keeps the conversation fresh and we continue to see new people who either participate in some fashion or simply enjoy the recitals from the audience. Since our successful poetry open mic launch, at the Indian Trail Cultural Arts Center, other venues in our area have followed suit and now offer similar showcases for artistic appetites.”

The ITCAC presented many pivotal “firsts” during the span of their two-year open mic events. Participants and audience members continue to experience a rewarding and engaging environment. During their 2014 National Poetry Month festivities, Mayor Michael Alvarez presented the first Mayoral Proclamation declaring April as National Poetry Month, in Indian Trail. The proclamation was then submitted to the Academy of American Poets to show the town’s support of the genre. Other firsts included a free children’s poetry workshop and food drive collaboration with Poets for Hunger© to benefit the local Common Cupboard pantry.

During their second annual open mic celebration in September, participants are invited to recite a poem, share a story, song or theatrical performance surrounding the theme: “Your Open Mic Experience.” For more information, to sign up to perform or to RSVP, contact Susan Didier at 704-821-2541, or email at sdidier@admin.indiantrail.org.
