The use of old and new, and mix and match, sets the stage.  One of our favorite elements of the new Cottage Chic Style is the fresh look of the light, airy and breezy painted furniture in soft pastels with graceful lines.  The distressing is lightly weathered, showing a little wear and tear without looking overly rustic. The botanical palette is fresh and clean:  apricot, buttery yellow, coastal blue and shades of green dominate.  Add light-weight delicate floral fabrics in washed-out hues, paired with stripes, wovens and linens with layers of trim and fringe. Slipcovers are now tailored.  Curtains are simple, sheer and breezy.  Limit bold colors to a handful of accessories, and keep it tone on tone.  Incorporate iron and textural elements such as wicker, burlap, and baskets.  A salvaged architectural door or shutter, or an interesting weathered barn door is absolutely charming.

Beadboard

An important element of the Cottage Chic Style is beadoard walls.  The classic grooved paneling adds warmth and character to bare walls, and is usually painted in a creamy white or with a hint of a subtle color.  Panel a bathrooom with beadboard for texture that pops.

Stay True to your Theme

In Cottage Chic Style decorating, wood flooring is queen.  Iron beds are now colorful.  The kitchen has open shelving in lieu of a bank of cabinets, filled with mismatched dishes and cookware.

And remember that not everything needs to be painted and chippy.  Strike a balance with a few accent pieces, and add a fancy chandelier, and you'll get the message across.
