By: Visual Answers Optometrists Loughborough In some cases visual stress doesn’t always last forever. Using the right coloured overlay or precision-tinted coloured glasses, with appropriate eye-exercises can help to ‘rewire’ your brain and teach it to work in new ways for good. Furthermore it’s not just children who benefit. Adults can, too. Colorimetry and precision-tinted glasses have been found to provide many other uses, including migraine, photo-sensitive epilepsy, acquired brain injury as well as dyslexia. Signs of Meares-Irlen Syndrome: Here are some tips to spot if your child is suffering from Visual Stress, Visual Dyslexia or Meares-Irlen Syndrome o They’re reluctant to read o They’re falling behind in their reading age o They complain the print hurts their eyes o They rub their eyes whilst reading o They’re fidgety and unwilling to sit down and read o They may have behavioural issues – linked to the discomfort of reading Symptoms of Meares-Irlen Syndrome: Far from being an ordered grouping of lines and text, here’s a description of how page looks to them: o Words on the page wobble, move, are ghosted, blurred, overlap or have a 3D appearance o They can see shapes appearing on the page o They find the white of the page very bright, often seeing rivers of white running through the page o Their eye jumps between lines, and they have difficulty tracking along the page COLOURED OVERLAY ASSESSMENT During the eye examination, Visual Answers carry out a detailed history after you complete a pre-assessment form plus they carry out in depth tests to check your eye-tracking and how your eyes perform work together. They will then carry out a rate of reading test and then trial a number of acetate plastic filters in various colours in front of you to determine if colour if any will help reduce the discomfort experienced. Coloured overlays are especially great for young children and students as they are cost effective to try and easy to use. Coloured overlays can only be used to assist reading paperwork, books and even music. Sometimes they recommend they are used for a month or so before coloured lens spectacles are considered. If coloured overlays provide a positive response, and colour is needed to help with writing, distance vision or computer use, Visual Answers move on to a test called ‘colorimetry’ COLORIMETRY ASSESSMENT Colorimetry testing tells them precisely what colour tinted spectacles to prescribe. The overlay test does not work in the same way as colorimetry, which is why there are separate types of tests. In colorimetry a light box is used with lots of coloured filters, a very specific colour is determined along with its colour, saturation density. Over 120 000 colour options are available. Visual Answers have had lots of great success with coloured overlays and tinted spectacles and honey comb filters over the years. Many people report a significant improvement in both the comfort, speed of reading and comprehension. Some children have found they may jump several reading ages in a short space of time. To arrange a Visual Stress Assessment you will need an up-to-date eye test where special attention paid to eye-tracking and eye co-ordination.
