Outpatient Sedation Dentistry is administered for complex cases and for patients who just want to take the sting out of their dental treatment. There are different varieties of sedation methods and Drs. Jim and Bart Carey as well as Dr. Jeffrey Jones want patients to know what their options are.

Nitrous Oxide also known as “laughing gas,” is offered on a level of minimal sedation. The patient will breathe nitrous oxide combined with oxygen through a mask that’s placed over the nose. The gas helps the patient relax and the dentist can control the amount of sedation he or she receives. The gas wears off quickly and is the only form of sedation where you may be able to drive yourself home after the procedure.

Conscious Sedation is a combination of medicines to help the patient relax (a sedative) and to block pain (an anesthetic). This form of sedation will keep the patient awake however it may cause them to slur their words when speaking and not remember the procedure. The medicine will wear off quickly, so it is used for short, uncomplicated procedures.

Two other forms of sedation include deep sedation and general anesthesia. During deep sedation, the patient is on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened. While under general anesthesia, the patient cannot be easily awakened until the effects of the anesthesia wear off or are reversed with medication.
