ROCHESTER, U.K. - Aug. 12, 2015 - PRLog -- The latest LED lighting is ideal for busy leisure facilities as it creates a bright, welcoming atmosphere while providing significant energy savings and reducing maintenance costs. To realise these benefits, Medway Council recently engaged LED manufacturer Earlsmann and installation experts NCS Technology to design and provide LED replacement lighting for the Strood Leisure Centre.

Matching lighting solutions to user needs

The Council’s requirement was to improve lighting across the Leisure Centre in areas including the swimming and hydrotherapy pools, changing rooms, corridors and sports hall. Earlsmann and NCS worked together as one team to determine the best solution for each specific location, ranging from updated floodlights for the pools and sports hall to replacement tubes in the changing areas and new panel lights in corridors.

Adding sparkle to swimming pools, sports halls and corridors

The main swimming pool at Strood Leisure Centre was lit with traditional flood lights, and light levels were as low as 20 lux in some places. This, combined with the dark wood ceiling, made it gloomy and unwelcoming for swimmers.

Earlsmann and NCS undertook modelling to calculate anticipated light levels and selected 130W CREE 304 series LED replacement lighting, choosing a 4000K colour temperature to light the area and create a brighter, more invigorating feel. As the lighting could only be mounted at 3.5m, Earlsmann selected a CREE lens and beam that achieved good uniformity over the entire pool area. For the hydrotherapy pool, the inefficient old fluorescent non-corrosive fittings were replaced with 5000K LED non-corrosives.

The CREE 304 series LED canopy light with daylight harvesting sensors was also installed in the sports hall, with a modified lens that was suitable for use directly above the playing area. To provide effective lighting across the leisure centre’s corridors, Earlsmann designed 600mm LED panels to replace 2x26W downlights, ensuring a bright, modern environment for staff and users moving around the Leisure Centre.

Reducing energy usage and maximising LED lifespan

LED lighting was the obvious choice to reduce energy use, and Earlsmann installed daylight harvesting and motion control sensors on each unit to allow light levels to be maintained while reducing unnecessary power use. By controlling the light to a required level, the luminaires are rarely at full brightness – contributing to an overall reduction in energy use of 75% and maximising the projected life of each unit, cutting the cost of maintenance and replacement.
