BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Aug. 12, 2015 - PRLog -- Three Hots and A Cot recently moved thier 650th veteran into supportive housing.  Three Hots and A Cot is a 501(c) (3) organization formed by veterans to help veterans.  Their primary mission is to assist homeless military veteran’s transition from life on the streets into a self-sustained lifestyle.

Changing one life at a time - Over one third of the homeless population is veterans.  Their Initiative is not new - it is not that much different from what many organizations are doing across the country.  Three Hots & A Cot's Initiative is needed.  There are homeless men and women on the streets of Alabama that served our nation.  For various reasons these veterans of the Armed Services find themselves living on the streets, in abandoned houses, under bridges, in old warehouses, in city parks, and in the back of rental trucks.  They are homeless.  Three Hots and A Cot was founded by veterans - to serve thier brothers and sisters who need our help.  NOT a Homeless Shelter - but a gateway to Independence.  JD Simpson - President & Co-founder says "Whatever the need of the veteran - we will help them meet it.  Whatever the road block is - we will help them move it.  Whatever the hurdle in the veteran's path - we will help them climb over it.  Three Hots and A Cot's objective is to be a source of healing and prevention of a national tragedy."

Three Hots & A Cot obtained a six bedroom home in the Woodlawn area of Birmingham in March of 2010.  After extensive renovations of the Saint Benedict’s Veterans Center – they opened up for housing on June 15, 2010.   Currently they have renovated the home to house eight veterans and one staff member  In October of 2010 they took ownership of a 15 bedroom – seven bath home in the Center Point area of Birmingham.  This became the Ryan WInslow Veterans Center and opened for housing  on December 18, 2010 and currently provide a home for 13 homeless veterans at this location plus housing for 4 formerly homeless veterans who now serve as part of the staff at Three Hots and A Cot.  In September of 2011 they brought in our first female homeless veteran – and now offer co-ed housing as needed to serve all of our veterans.  Their first shared/independent living facility opened in Woodlawn the end of August 2012 and is now home to three veterans in long term and more permanent housing. Since that time an additioal seven homes were renovated for independent living.  Three Hots & A Cot currently operates ten houses – two transitional and eight independent living.

Earlier this year JD Simpson had an opportunity to meet with President George W. Bush in Dallas when Three Hots & A Cot  was selected as one of 25 nonprofits out of nearly 46,000 that worked with the President’s study on providing services to Post 9/11 Veterans.   The organization is always striving to improve the services needed by veterans in their community.

They are currently working on fundraising for a veterans training and community center in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham.  They are in need of an additional $100,000 to complete what will be known as The Foxhole Veterans Center.  Their goal is have this location opened for use by the community and veterans in 2017.
