INDIANAPOLIS - Aug. 8, 2015 - PRLog -- D.  DEL REVERDA-JENNINGS Showcased In The "WOMEN OF A NEW TRIBE" Photographic Portraiture Exhibition:

Central, Indianapolis Public Library (INDYPL), located 40 E. St. Clair Street.

The community is invited to come out and view a magnificent photographic exhibition highlighting eleven of Indianapolis most noted African American women during the Central, Indianapolis Public Libraries' presentation of "Women Of A New Tribe," an acclaimed national traveling exhibition and photographic portraiture showcase.

North Carolina photographer Jerry Taliaffero’s acclaimed national exhibition is a traveling photographic showcase, designed to honor the physical and spiritual beauty of the African-American woman, featuring women from all walks and stages of life and highlights positive strong, accomplished local women from the Indianapolis community.

The exhibition will be on display and open to the public August 8th - September 27th, 2015 at the Central, Indianapolis Public Library (INDYPL).

The exhibition created by North Carolina photographer Jerry Taliaferro, is comprised of stunning black and white portraits of seventy-five American Black women, including eleven noted women of Indianapolis who were nominated and subsequently selected for their roles as mothers, daughters, artists, professionals and community activists.   Individually and collectively they tell the story of how their families and our community have changed because of them.

Taliaferro's traveling exhibition evolved from a single photograph produced for an intended portfolio of a beautiful black woman in the style reminiscent of the high-glamour Hollywood photography of 1930's and 1940's.  The model was photographed against a light-absorbing black background.  Then a second exposure was made of an African mask.  More photographs with this tribal theme were soon added to Taliaferro's portfolio.

Since its premiere in 2002, "Women of a New Tribe" has traveled extensively and has been enthusiastically received by the public and media in the United States and Europe as well.  A popular feature is the inclusion of portraits taken by Taliaferro of women from the hosting communities.

The local women represented in the Indianapolis exhibition are:  Joyce Moore,  Linda Everett,  Deborah Asante,  Thea Kelly,  Ethel Brewer-McCane,  Hope Hampton,  Fay H. Williams,  D.  Del Reverda-Jennings,  Trina Avery,  DeShong Perry-Smitherman,  and Ericka Gibson.

The selected Indianapolis area women were honored during a Gala Opening Reception, ribbon cutting and unveiling of the photographic portraiture exhibition at the Central, Indianapolis Public Library in the Simon Reading Room on Friday, August 7th, 2015.  The event was hosted by the Indianapolis Public Library’s African-American History Committee and Jackie Nytes, Library CEO.   Maggie Lewis, Indianapolis City Council President was the events keynote speaker.  A catalogue featuring the noted Indianapolis women was created to accompany the exhibition.

As a community outreach for the exhibition, school children in grades 4 - 8 are invited to Central Library throughout September for a Free! workshop presented by A Girl's Gift, Inc., during which they'll design a dream board to express their internal hopes, dreams and plans.   Contact: 317-275-4222 to register a Group.
