By: Theatre Arts Press

Aug. 5, 2015 - PRLog -- In an effort to preserve musical theatre history, Theatre Arts Press has created the Historical Libretto Series of musical plays, published librettos to classic and noteworthy musical of the 19th and early 20th Century.

Included in the published series are the ground breaking musicals “Shuffle Along” (1921) and “Evangeline” (1874) as well as lost musicals of the American stage such as “The Little Tycoon” (1886) the first American operetta influenced by Gilbert and Sullivan.

As part of the series, historical significant musicals are represented including “The Black Crook” (1866) considered the first book musical and “A Glance at New York in 1848” (1848) the first American musical farce.

Broadway musicals of the early 20 th Century include George M. Cohan’s “Little Johnny Jones,” the hit 1919 book musical “Apple Blossoms,” and the book and lyrics to “The Ziegfeld Follies of 1919.”

British musicals are represented including ground breaking musicals from the Gaiety Theatre and Drury Lane.

When these musicals were first produced, their vocal scores were readily published and made available to the public. However their librettos were unavailable and most were only available in manuscript. Now with the Historical Libretto Series, the books to these noteworthy musicals are now preserved in new published editions.

More information on the series can be found at www.musical-librettos.com.
