HOUSTON - Aug. 5, 2015 - PRLog -- Brian Lovins, PhD, the Assistant Director for Harris County Community Supervision and Corrections Department, has an interesting life. He had a most interesting past, and after his appearance on a recent edition of Make It Happen with David Lorms, listeners to the broadcast/podcast think he will have a very interesting future!

Growing up in a blue collar family in Cincinnati, Lovins played any sport that included a ball - especially loving baseball. His perspective on life took a sharp turn one night when he was 7 years old. While watching Lavern and Shirley on television with his parents, he found out he had been adopted at birth. "The episode was about 'Squiggy' finding out he was adopted and my folks took that moment to segue way into a conversation about me!" he says good-naturedly. "Even as a kid I saw the world in a different perspective from my friends. I knew early on that where and how you're brought up actually drives who you become." While in his twenties, he hired a private detective and found his birth mother. They have a good relationship. "I'm glad my parents weren't threatened by my search and current relationship. They, after all, are my parents," he said.

"If there was a ball involved, I played it. I loved the Reds and playing baseball.  It was a good outlet for me and I liked the camaraderie with my teammates and the thinking part of the game," he said. Although neither of his parents experienced higher education themselves, his father worked overtime to put him and his brother through private schools and college. Lovins gives credit to his parents for much of his academic success.  The college experience changed his life forever, originally wanting to be a lawyer. His BA is from a private college, Dennison University in Ohio. "It is a small liberal arts school with about 2,000 students. It has a very good pre-law department and I could start as a freshman on the baseball team. They call it  the 'Ivy Tower of the Midwest' and going there opened my eyes to a different world," he commented. While he studied pre-law, he developed an interest in Social Work. "After my first college test - I realized I wasn't going to be a lawyer! I switched majors pretty quickly" he laughed.

He had big goals at Dennison, realizing he wanted to work with kids. "I wanted to be the president of NAACP! As white guys I think we can get stuck in our own world. I wanted to be more socially aware," said Lovins. Why grad school? "Because I couldn't find a job" he exclaimed. He received an MA from the University of Cincinnati in Social Work.

"At 25 I had an MA and was a bouncer at a bar at night and worked with kids during the day." He said he had 7 jobs in 7 years including being a social worker on a Navajo reservation where he 'really grew up.' He met his wife while they were working in a sex offender program. It was then they both met their mentor Dr. Edward J Latessa who speaks all around the world helping offenders change their personal worlds.

The couple received their PhDs in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati which has a highly ranked Department of Criminology. He has over 50 publications to his name from his research projects at the University of Cincinnati. He went on to say, "I write for people in the field doing the actual work and not for academics. Knowledge is wasted if it's only used for academia. I want us to do things differently and to change behavior in our clients. Knowledge is power, after all."

Lovins continued, "We have discovered from Dr. Latessa and our research that punishment doesn't change behavior; it stops behavior. What changes behavior is learning a new way to behave. We want to open people's eyes to see that there's a different way to get good results." He's all about doing the right thing. In Lovins' current job, he teaches his staff to make good choices, relying on their good values. "That way you never have to hide what you have done, even if the decision may not have worked out the way you wanted. That's because you can honestly - if not proudly - explain where the decision came from."

Lovins has seen that the hardest part of any incarceration is re-entry into the outside world. "There are some programs across the country that are doing great things with those who are in jail or prison and readying for life outside those walls. They must recognize an opportunity to grow and go from there." Lovins drives his life today by having a well defined goal in his head. He explains, "Does this decision get me closer of further away to my goal?"  He teaches those who have committed offences to do that. How to start to think, solve problems and not to be reactionary. "Acting in a reactionary way may feel good at the time, but is often the beginning of worse behavior."

The Lovins have lived in Houston and worked for Harris County for two years now.  He recently performed a Criminal Study for the Oak Forest area, where he lives. "When I moved to the area, I quickly learned that when anyone posted a local crime on the internet, 5,000 people got all scared because they felt the crime had happened next door!" While performing a study on crime in the Oak Forest, he found out the neighborhood doesn't have a big crime problem. "The crime rate here is 3 houses out of 100 over an 28 month time span. Some zones had 0 from 28 months and a few have 4 or 5 per 100. It's a great place to live and work. We have a very low crime rate, great schools, wonderful home owners and a great business association," Lovins concluded.
