Follow on Google News | American Aging Experts Travel to Taiwan to Ride with the GrandridersWorking to Defy Age Stereotypes Through 4 Day Bike Ride in Taiwan
By: Silver Dawn Senior Friendly Cities A 4 day, 5 night motorcycle ride will take the group of elders, at the average age of 81, most of who deal with such illnesses such as: cancer, heart disease and arthritis. The Grandriders prepare for weeks prior to the trip, getting a licence to ride the motorcycle, clearance from doctors, exercise, stretching and diet. Through the assistance of the Hondao Senior Citizens Welfare Foundation, the Taiwan elders are supported to continue living beyond the age they are assigned. As quoted in the Grandriders Facebook page: “ I did not stop riding because I got old, I got old because I stopped riding.” Silver Dawn Founders Tami Neumann and Cathy Braxton first met the coordinators of the Grandriders tour, Silver Linings Global, in San Francisco in May of 2015. Through discussions both organizations realized that they were attempting to change the aging space in very similar ways. Silver Linings Global attempts to “bust stereotypes of aging” by promoting dream fulfilling events for the elders in their communities, such as Grandrider tours, because they believe “Dreams never get old”. Silver Dawn focuses on changing existing communities by creating Senior Friendly Cities. Silver Dawn accomplishes this by implementing a social model that trains, educates and provides hands on techniques and empathy enhancement to first responders, health care professionals, traditional businesses and residents within the city as well as enhancing the recreational programming provided to the older adult population. Silver Dawn challenges the idea of the “Silver tsunami” by focusing on breaking down stereotypes, introducing sensitivity training at an intergenerational level and providing real life techniques that can by used by anyone and everyone. Silver Dawn has spoken to multiple aging adult community groups encouraging them to focus on continuing to dream beyond 80. Silver Dawn is speaking at the Dementia 2015 International Conference held in Toronto Canada, The Prairie State Mental Health Seminar, the Michiana Institute on Aging Conference and Presence St. Joseph Aging Symposium. Both Silver Linings Global and Silver Dawn believe in a similar mission “would you still dare to dream when you are 80 years old”. The answer to that is “YES” and both Silver Linings Global and Silver Dawn encourage individuals, families and communities in supporting this true mission to living a fulfilling life. What makes Silver Dawn and this opportunity unique: Silver Dawn was founded in March of 2015 and has made incredible strides in reaching out to communities and implementing attainable certifications to become senior friendly. Founders Tami and Cathy are middle class women, working every free minute to create a social program that can transform the aging space. They are using their own funds, living check to check, networking and using barter and trade to accomplish their dreams of making the world a better place for the aging adult of today and the baby boomer generation to come.
