By: Catylator Makerspace A makerspace is a both a place and a community that encourages and supports people who want to design, create and build things with their hands. The sense of agency that individuals experience when they build, or even tinker, is a powerful force for positive change in people and communities. Reemberto Rodriguez, Director of the Silver Spring Regional Center, commented, "To have Catylator choose Silver Spring is truly an honor. They will bring their innovative and inventive energy to our community, joining forces with the many other 'creatives' in the area to build not just things, but a stronger and more vibrant Silver Spring." Catylator Makerspace will focus on local community engagement, with special programs for teens who are preparing for college and careers. The "Teen Shop" program will offer classes and supervised workshop hours exclusively for qualified teens aged 12-18. Programming will range from computer-aided 3D-modeling and wearable electronics to handcrafted woodworking and traditional textiles crafts. Stephen Morris, Catylator Founder, noted, “Downtown Silver Spring sits at the center of a rich cultural region. Montgomery County is one of the most diverse counties in the nation, and we are just minutes from Washington DC. Our central location is easy and safe for teens and adult members to access, which wouldn’t have been possible in an industrial area." He also added, "Our location will help us build robust collaborative initiatives with Maker-oriented organizations in our area. ” Catylator Makerspace will include two classrooms and an open workshop area. Essential equipment will include 3D printers, a laser cutter, desktop CNC milling machine, vinyl printer/cutter, sewing machines (includes sergers, coverstitch, embroidery and quilting), knitting machines, microelectronics stations, a lightbox for small object photography, computers with design software, and general workbench tools. To accommodate members who need specialized equipment, Catylator will partner with regional wood shops, metal shops, and makerspaces with industrial equipment. The World Building is an ideal location for Catylator Makerspace’s first facility, as it offers safe and easy access for the adults and teens who live, work, and attend school nearby. The location is pedestrian-friendly, surrounded by Montgomery County public parking, is a half-mile walk from the Silver Spring Metro station, and is within easy walking distance of the future ArtSpace artist housing and workspace (at the site of the old Police station at 801 Sligo Avenue). About Catylator Makerspace Catylator is a professionally run makerspace for teens and adults to develop digital design skills and enjoy hands-on creation.
