Follow on Google News | Site Specific Installation by NJ artist Katie Truk opens at The Center for Contemporary ArtIn 1995, while an undergrad at Alfred University, Truk began experimenting with pantyhose as a medium. She stated, “My pieces are a marriage of sensual malleability of pantyhose and the rigidity of wire. Internal conversation and motion are induced within the static confine. Thread binds and extends the aggression and vulnerability, echoing life’s twists, turns, and pulling within our rigorous regulations and expectations.” Truk stated, “All the pantyhose in this installation were donated by the CCA community. Over fifteen pounds were contributed, for the greater part, by women. Each pair contains the hopes of being their best.Collectively these woman stand enduringly as trees. Weathering the storms. Sheltering and nurturing life. Radiant in bloom, bearing of fruit, and shedding of time. It is they that support the hives of life.” The Center for Contemporary Art’s Exhibition Chair, Wes Sherman, stated, “We are excited to have Katie Truk’s installation “Wishful Intentions” in our lobby gallery. Her use of pantyhose simultaneously embodies’ strength and frailty. Like the surreal quality of nature this hosiery seem at a breaking point as it is stretched, twisted, and is tugged on. “Wishful Intentions” conveys the feeling of a forest canopy as you look up and find yourself in wonderment of the patterns, colors, and play of light that takes place.” The Center for Contemporary Art thanks Rainbow G&J Painting LLC of Manville, N.J. for loaning tall ladders to the artist for the duration of the installation and the many volunteers who helped with the installation. Jpeg images are available upon request. About The Center for Contemporary Art Founded in 1970, The Center for Contemporary Art was known until fall 2010 known as the Somerset Art Association.
