The Right Approach: Transition your Children into their New Home

FRANKLIN, Mass. - July 30, 2015 - PRLog -- As a parent, the last thing we want to do to our children is upset them.  Moving into a new home with children can be tricky.  I use the word "tricky" because there is no simple answer to this obstacle.  Granted, some children may have a very easy time with the change while others may not.  There is no cookie cutter solution to this matter but I hope to provide you with some insightful tips to help your children transition into the move.

•Have honest conversations

It is important to mention that different ages will react and handle the situation differently. One of the first components to overcome this obstacle, for any age, is honesty.  Being honest with your children gives them the security that the entire family is in this together.  You do not want your children to feel abandoned.  In order to have honesty and unity among your family, plan a family conversation where they can ask as many questions as they want.  It is important to remember that their reactions may not be positive, so welcome any and all reactions.

•Involve them in the plans

If you are in the beginning stages of moving, welcome them into the discussion and plans from start to finish.  When looking for new houses, allow them to contribute their opinions and be sure to listen to them.  Children handle moves better when they are prepared and a part of the process. Also be sure to provide your children with information about the new location and environment they will be surrounded by.  If you are close enough, go spend a day in the new town or city you will be moving to in order to make your children feel more comfortable with their new surroundings.

•Stick to the routines

Children develop and grow based on routines.  Once the moving is underway be sure to maintain the routines that your children respond to.  Since their environment is changing, the rest of the family structure and routines need to still be maintained for a smooth transition.

•Control your own emotions

Children respond to what they observe, feel and see, making it extremely important for you as a parent to control your own emotions from the move.  Moves can evolve from both negative and positive circumstances so always try to embrace a positive outlook when discussing with children.

Once the move has occurred be sure to continue these techniques since the transition is still fresh for all of you.  Stay positive by allowing them to help decorate their rooms.   Allowing your children to design and pick out colors for a blank canvas is a fun way to let them know that though it is a new house, it is still theirs.  Moving can be stressful for a family and hard on children but with a positive atmosphere and the right approach, it can be smooth transition.
