Pacific Islands Society Calls for Public Referendum on DoD Live-Fire Training on Tinian and Pagan

New Change.org Petition Demands that Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Residents Be Given the Power to Decide Future of Proposed Live-Fire Military Training on Tinian and Pagan

SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands - July 27, 2015 - PRLog -- Today, the Pacific Islands Society called on the Government of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) to commit to hold a public referendum on proposed live-fire military training exercises on the islands of Pagan and Tinian.

The Change.org petition is a response to plans by the United States Department of Defense to expand military training in CNMI, including converting the entire island of Pagan into a live-fire training range. Over the past six months, these plans have been met with fierce opposition from local residents.

Given mounting public opposition to the plans, the Pacific Islands Society believes that local residents should have the final word on whether the live-fire military exercises on Tinian and Pagan move forward.

According to the Pacific Islands Society, a public referendum would ensure that, in the words of the executive director of Marine Corps Forces Pacific, the expanded military training not only meets the needs of the U.S. military but also properly safeguards and compensates the residents for any associated economic disruptions, ecological damages, and negative social impacts.
