The rich are different
F. Scott Fitzgerald told us that the rich are different from you and me and now researchers in the U.K. suggest that one difference may stem from the fact that they drink more than you and me, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens.

A massive 9,000 person study, which was reported in a British medical journal, showed that affluent seniors live pretty healthy lifestyles except for the fact that many of them drink too much.  Most health experts suggest limiting intake to two glasses of wine at dinner, but the British study showed that the wealthy can consume the better part of a bottle of wine a day.

“Our findings suggest that harmful drinking in later life is more prevalent among people who exhibit a lifestyle associated with affluence and with a ‘successful’ ageing process.  Harmful drinking may then be a hidden health and social problem in otherwise successful older people,” the report concluded.

Dog days of summer
The dog days of summer are here and for the younger people among us it is a time for fun in the sun, but for older folks it’s a dangerous time of the year, says the Association of Mature American Citizens.

It’s okay to enjoy a walk or a picnic in the outdoors when the weather is mild and dry.  But when it’s steamy outside you are better off engaging in indoor activities, preferably in a space that’s climate controlled for comfort.  Check in with your doctor if you experience symptoms such as weakness, wooziness or cramping, suggests AMAC.

And, make sure you drink lots of water to avoid dehydration.

Zumba: it rhymes with Rhumba
In case you missed it, the world Zumba record was broken in the Philippines last week-- again, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens.  It was done with nearly 13,000 fitness fanatics, all of them sporting bright yellow T-Shirts, stylishly assembling on a street in the heart of Manila.

The Guinness Book of World Records quickly memorialized the feat, acknowledging that the previous record held by some 8,232 Zumba dancers on the Philippine island of Cebu has been surpassed.

In case you are not familiar with Zumba, it is a new fitness craze—an aerobic dance performed to the upbeat Latin music.
