PHILADELPHIA - Aug. 1, 2015 - PRLog -- Training is underway for what is sure to become one of the hottest 5K's in Philadelphia. The Ivy Legacy Foundation (TILF), the charitable arm of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Rho Theta Omega Chapter, is presenting the first annual "Chasing a Dream 5K and 1Mile Walk" on Saturday September 12th at 8:30am at Forbidden Drive and Northwestern Avenue in Philadelphia. The race will be professionally timed by the Bryn Mawr Racing and you can pre-register at a discounted rate of $30 for adults and $20 for children (12 and under) on their website http://www.brynmawrracing.com. On-site registration is $5 more, so you are encouraged to sign up in advance. In an effort to attract first timers, you can also walk for 1-mile for only $15 ($20 on site). All "Chasing a Dream 5K and 1Mile Walk" proceeds benefit the scholarship program and mentoring for middle and high school students. "Over the past 20 years, we have given away more than a quarter-million dollars in scholarships to area college bound students," says Jacquelyn Washington, President of the Ivy Legacy Foundation. "By supporting this race you will help us continue to make a difference in the Greater Philadelphia community we serve through educational and cultural programs."  The Ivy Legacy Foundation has set a goal of raising $50,000 through this "Chasing a Dream 5K and 1Mile Walk" and its signature "Philly's Men Are Cooking" fundraising event in November. The Ivy Legacy Foundation partners with local and national initiatives that focus on global impact, environmental ownership, family strengthening, and health promotion. Organizers hope the lower registration fees and walk option will encourage whole families to participate and start this Fall focused on health and wellness. "Based on the statistics on obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, Alpha Kappa Alpha has an international initiative to promote health and wellness in communities," says Robyn Jones, M.D., President of AKA's Rho Theta Omega Chapter.  "A family-friendly race like Chasing a Dream fits right into our mission statement and overall goals for the upcoming year."  The Ivy Legacy Foundation seeks to bring the love of running and walking to enthusiasts as well as beginners. Chasing a Dream Co-chairs, Monica Miller-Bailey and Candice Richardson are experienced runners and have started a weekly training program for first timers. "I started running 3 years ago and it is addictive once you get started," says Monica Miller-Bailey. "Since 2012 I have run 5K's, The Broad Street Run three times, half marathons.... now I am training for my first full marathon in the fall."  "We run longer distances now but that wasn't always the case," says Candice Richardson. "Running with friends and online training programs like the Couch 2 5K really helped me get started and develop a passion for the pavement."
