SCOTUS Decision on Same Sex Marriage "Puts Everyone on the Same Page" for Financial Planners

July 24, 2015 - PRLog -- Upper Montclair, NJ, July 2015 - The Financial Planning Association of New Jersey (FPANJ) welcomed an announcement by its national organization, FPA®, of its partnership with PridePlanners, the association for planners who serve the LGBT communities. The goal will be to collaborate to help financial planners on how to best serve this client base.

The announcement came in a press release from the FPA® (https://www.onefpa.org/about/Press-Room/Pages/SCOTUS-Marriage-Equality-Ruling-Opens-Door-for-Financial-Planners-to-Increase-Knowledge-Skill.aspx)shortly after the United States Supreme Court rendered its decision that same-sex marriage is a right among all states. A joint statement confirmed, "FPA and PridePlanners are committed to helping planners obtain the latest in planning strategies and connect them with resources that will be integral in helping LGBT clients."

FPA® and PridePlanners will be providing all members with an interactive webinar in August on the issue of planning for LGBT. Also, during the FPA's annual conference in Boston, PridePlanners will conduct a pre-conference event (http://fpa-be.org/prideplanners-preconference/) on Sept. 25, which will be followed by a breakout session. (View details here: http://fpa-be.org/prideplanners-preconference/)

The decision will make financial planning issues for same-sex couples easier for financial planners, according to FPANJ President Bill Stratton, who welcomed the opportunity to gain more knowledge through the webinar and pre-conference event.

"Hopefully, this decision puts everyone on the same page. The financial issues overall will be very similar, and it takes away a lot of the confusion as the rules are the same among all states," he said. "It provides clarity on issues of inheritance, social security and other financial planning issues that affect families."

According to the joint statement, "FPA and PridePlanners will now have the opportunity to engage a much larger audience to help planners accrue the knowledge and skill required to work with LGBT clients."
