He ain't heavy. He's my brother

Every veteran has a story and every story is different, but every story portrays strength and courage…both then and now.”

OSHKOSH, Wis. - July 21, 2015 - PRLog -- Every veteran has a story and every story is different, but every story portrays strength and courage, both then and now.

Dave and Paul Mix are brothers who routinely volunteer with the DAV Flight Team at the “World’s Largest Aviation Celebration” – EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.  This year was no exception.

Older brother Paul volunteered for the 82nd Airbourne where he was stationed in Europe and Africa from 1962-1965  “I was one of those guys who jumped out of perfectly good airplanes … and volunteered to do so,” exclaimed Paul.  Paul’s spirit of volunteerism is what led him to DAV following his time in the service.  “I just like to help veterans get from point A to point B. Some of these men and women are having a tough time… they need our help.”  That is where Paul comes in.  Paul is one of the hundreds of thousands of veterans helping veterans with the DAV.  For many years he drove veterans in need to and from their local VA.

Paul’s younger brother, Dave Mix was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 where he served in Vietnam under the 101st Airboure Infantry.  After years of helping at the VA hospital in Appleton, Dave joined the DAV just two years ago.  When Paul retired he found himself needing something to keep him active. He  could think of no better thing to do than give back to those who served.  “I help to make sure these vets are checked into the VA properly. I make sure their paperwork is all in order. The paperwork required is often overwhelming and confusing. I like to help folks through DAV-folks who maybe didn't know where to turn to before.”

Helping at the DAV Flight Team display at Oshkosh AirVenture is the highlite of July for these brothers. This year is extra special as Dave will also be joining the American Airlines Old Glory honor flight on Friday that will be taking Vietnam veterans to the Vientnam memorial sites in Washinton, D.C.  The honor flight will proceed the Friday night “Gary Sinise and the LT. Dan Band” concert sponsored by DAV and EAA Warbirds of America with support from Rob Hagedorn.
