TOLEDO, Ohio - July 21, 2015 - PRLog -- Toledo, Ohio – The Great Lakes Premier League has accepted Toledo United as its second expansion team to join the league. Toledo’s newest minor league team will begin play in the 2016 season.

“We are very excited to join this exciting new league,” Toledo United founder Peter Schinkai said. “The GLPL presents a oneofakind opportunity for soccer fans in Toledo to cheer for their own top level minor league soccer team. We are looking forward to building a fun and competitive franchise in Toledo.”

The GLPL currently fields five teams based in Chicago, Milwaukee, Ann Arbor, Mich., Grand Rapids, Mich., and Rochester, Mich. Each team plays an eightgame league schedule, along with nonleague friendlies. A secondMilwaukee area team, the Milwaukee Bavarians, was previously announced as the league’s first expansion team.

The addition of Toledo United will raise the total league count to seven teams in 2016.

“Each team in the Great Lakes Premier League has played highly competitive soccer in a fan-friendly environment during our inaugural season,” said GLPL commissioner Keith Karbo. “We value the partnership with each of our communities. Toledo’s support of its sports teams is well known, and we welcome Toledo United to the league.”

Toledo United will play its home games at the Lucas County Recreation Center and is working with LineDrive Sportz to upgrade the facility with enhanced amenities. The facility consists of a football stadium that will become the home for Toledo United, Ned Skeldon Stadium which was formerly the home of the Toledo Mud Hens, an indoor training facility and a walking trail.

“The Lucas County Recreation Center has such a rich and exciting sports history,” Schinkai said. “It will be an honor to be able to bring minor league sports back to this historic venue, while also working with LineDrive Sportz and Lucas County to modernize this facility, making it a special place for the community.”
