An image is the most suitable means to present a location. We know thousands of locations by their image, even before seeing them for real. We often decide to travel to the location of the picture based on an image. It is an obvious idea to let images also be a tool for setting destinations in navigation devices. This idea is the basis of our project. We are already using photo based navigation and can tell you that it's awesome! However, the only way you will be part of this experience is once you start using it on a regular basis as well. Using images for setting destinations in navigation devices is truly convenient, but you will soon discover that it has many more uses.

Our aim is for you to know how to get there from anywhere immediately once you see an image of a location of interest to you. Our technology is already capable of this, but we need to create overall global awareness of it to shape it into a standard global system.

Smartphone devices are today prevalent all over the world. This is why we decided that we will first make smartphone devices capable of photo navigation. This way, may will have immediate access to the new opportunities. In the future, we would like to make all navigation devices capable of photo based navigation. A smartphone device can be made capable of many tasks using an app. The NaviCard app turns your smartphone into a navigation device. Following this, you can set destination using various types of photos: digital photos, printed photos and on-screen photos.

Digital photos created with smartphone devices contain the geographical coordinates where the picture was taken. The NaviCard app reads these coordinates from the metadata of the photo and uses them for setting destinations to navigation. The coordinates of the location where printed photos were taken are placed next to the image in printed form. This is read by the camera of the smartphone when pointing the device at the image. A small, narrow bar code is used to store the coordinates, which takes up little space and is not conspicuous. The same code is also used for images displayed on any web page. As a result, destinations can be entered into the smartphone navigation from the screen.

The NaviCard is a standard business card sized card containing a photo and text information of the location, which is in addition capable of setting destinations into navigation devices. This card is an excellent solution for the global promotion of photo based navigation as it can be produced anywhere in the world at a low cost. Our project has been named NaviCard after this card.
