South Side Community Art Center’s 50th Annual Art Auction to feature treasure trove of AA Art

CHICAGO - July 20, 2015 - PRLog -- (CHICAGO) -- The South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC) will host its 50th Annual Art Auction & Fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 1, at Herman Hall (Illinois Institute of Technology Campus and site of 1st Annual Art Auction), 3241 S. Federal St., from 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. As throughout its history, the Auction will feature art from established and emerging artists, including such nationally recognized artists including Elizabeth Catlett (http://www.elizabethcatlett.net), Eldzier Cortor (http://www.artic.edu/exhibition/eldzier-cortor-coming-home-recent-gifts-art-institute), Margaret Burroughs (http://www.thehistorymakers.com/biography/margaret-burroughs-40), Hebru Brantley (http://hebrubrantley.com/), William Carter, Richard Hunt, Joyce Owens, Buchi Upjohn, Woodrow Nash, Martha Wade (http://www.galleryna19.com/martha-wade/), David Geary (http://www.davidanthonyart.com/painting-1/), and Eugene “Edaw” Wade.

The Art Auction serves as the organization's primary fundraiser. Funds raised will support the organization's mission: to preserve, conserve and promote the legacy and future of African American art and artists, while educating the community on the value of art and culture. The SSCAC Annual Art Auction also gives emerging artists the opportunity to have their works viewed and purchased along side nationally and internationally established artists.  2015 also marks the 75th Anniversary of the SSCAC.

Honorary Chairs for the event are Commissioner Michelle Boone, City of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, Naomi Beckwith, Marilyn and Larry Fields CuratorMuseum of Contemporary Artand Executive Director Ra Joy,Arts Alliance Illinois. Art Auctioneers include celebrated Artist Candace Hunter, founderof Chlee Art and guest auctioneer Jumaane N'Namdi,N'Namdi Contemporary Miami. NBC 5 Chicago’s LeeAnn Trotter will be the evening’s emcee.

SSCAC Advisory Board Member and renowned artist Faheem Majeed (http://www.faheemmajeed.com/#!about/c10fk) will be honored for both his artistry and life of service, including serving as SSCAC Executive Director (2005 to 2011). There will also be a musical tribute to legendary Artist and Civil Rights Activist Oscar Brown, Jr. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Brown) by his daughter Maggie.  Brown was in attendance at the Center’s 1st Annual Art Auction 50 years ago.

Since 1940, SSCAC has been a community force supporting the arts and providing art education and programming to Chicago’s metropolitan area youth, adults and seniors. SSCAC will celebrate its Diamond Anniversary this December. In commemoration of its 75th milestone they will introduce the NextGen 75 Associates Board at the 50th Art Auction.
