By: Whitegate PR INC Sorghum, a grain, forage or sugar crop, is among the most efficient crops in conversion of solar energy and use of water. It is a naturally high energy, drought tolerant, dependable crop, with many uses and applications. Animal feeding in the livestock industry is one of the largest markets for sorghum production in the United States and worldwide; however, livestock are not the only animals benefiting from sorghum. The pet industry is utilizing sorghum in their products too. Sorghum provides a cost competitive and nutritious feed ingredient for pet food companies, who are using the grain for carbohydrate blends in dog and cat foods. Sorghum is now being utilized by eight pet food companies in more than 25 products including companies such as; IAMS, Blackwood, Mr. Bucks Pet Food, Eukanuba, Newman’s Own Organics, to name a few. Sorghum is also used in bird seed. The large red or white grain provides a high quality ingredient for bird seed companies. On Wednesday, July 22 at 10:30am, SuperZoo show goers are invited to the HORN Animal Wellness Booth #25155 for a special sorghum presentation: Dr. Aldrich is a Research Associate Professor at Kansas State University, a free-lance nutritionist in the pet food industry, and regular contributor to Petfood Industry Magazine. His research program is focused on processes to improve pet food safety, nutrient delivery, and extend shelf-life. He specializes in teaching about ingredients and procedures used to make modern pet foods and how they mesh to deliver the right nutrition and product.
