Mumbai Metro Caters To 100 Million Passengers In A Year

By: Reliance Group

DELHI, India - July 17, 2015 - PRLog -- Mumbai Metro One Private Ltd., a subsidiary of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Infrastructure, and the rapid transit system serving the city of Mumbai, just celebrated its first anniversary, and transported a 100 million passengers in a little over the first 12 months of operation. Commissioned on 8th June 2014 and designed to reduce traffic congestion in the city, this mass transit system is based on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model and is run jointly by two French Companies, RATP Dev and Trans Dev, brought in by the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group.

The 11.4 km long corridor connects east and west of the city and has substantially reduced the travel time between Versova and Ghatkopar, from 90 minutes to mere 20 minutes, while providing a comfortable travel experience. With a ridership of about 2.75 lakh commuters per day, the Mumbai Metro, in its one year of operation has already become the eighth most dense metro rail corridor in the world.

Although Mumbai Metro has gained enough popularity for supplementing the overcrowded Mumbai Suburban Railway network, environmentalists have rasied a few doubts over its ecological impact. Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), which is responsible for the implementation of all the Metro Rail Corridors under the Mumbai Metro Rail Project, was under the scanner briefly for their plan to construct a Metro Car Depot at Aarey, one of the green lungs of the city.

The car depot is to be made in a 30 hectare plot which would cost 2298 trees. MMRC has since then revisted its development model to make several aspects environment- friendly and is now targeting the best possible rating for the 33.5-km Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro project from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) rating mechanism.

With the development of Mumbai Metro-I and Mumbai Metro-II, MMOPL is looking forward to creating a wide network of comfort and convenience for its commuters. And with its first-year track record that speaks for itself, the news couldn’t be any better for Mumbaikars.
