Artist John Sims Auctions Noosed Confederate Flag at Moberg Gallery

DES MOINES, Iowa - July 16, 2015 - PRLog -- Recently for both Memorial Day and July 4th, John Sims staged Confederate flag burnings and burials across America as a part of the 13 Flag Funerals creative resistance performance piece. The latest work from his Recoloration Proclamation is the installation, The Proper Way to Buy a Confederate Flag.

This work is inspired by the his controversial work, The Proper Way to Hang a Confederate Flag, first presented in Gettyburg, Pennsylvania in 2004. This piece caused the Sons of Confederate Veterans to call for a national boycott of Gettysburg. This auction installation is a part of the group exhibition, Make Their Gold Teeth Ache curated by Jordan Weber featuring eight other artists including Dread Scott and Mitchell Squire. The piece consists of a 6’x4’ polyester/cotton blend Confederate flag made in the USA. The flag hangs from a standard Hangman’s Noose made from 1” manila natural fibers. This work is for the collector or supporter who wishes to make a powerful statement against visual terrorism and support art that advocates social justice through creative resistance. Part of the proceeds of the sale will go to the completion of John Sims’ documentary film Recoloration Proclamation: The Video Diaries. John Sims, a Detroit native, is a multi-media mathartist artist, creating projects spanning the areas of mathematics, art, text, performance and political-media activism. He is currently completing, Recoloration Proclamation, 15 year multi-media project featuring: an exhibition of recolored and hanging Confederate flags, multi-state flag funerals, a play, a documentary film, and a CD project. His work has been featured in Nature, Art in America, USA Today, Sculpture, Transition, FiberArts, NYArts, Science News, CNN, NBC News, The New York Times, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. He lives and works in Sarasota, Florida.
