TROY, Mich. - July 18, 2015 - PRLog -- Michigan-based startup, Kidpreneur, is focused on teaching children entrepreneurship and the latest technology including computer programming (aka coding). So it only makes sense for Kidpreneur to host a Kids HACKATHON at the 2015 Maker Faire® Detroit. The event is Saturday, July 25th from 10:00AM to 5:00PM at the Henry Ford in Dearborn.

For those of you that are not in the tech scene, a hackathon is also known as a codefest where computer programmers and others involved in software and hardware development collaborate intensively on software projects. The nation's largest student hackathon is MHack at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor which takes place in February. This year, it had around 500 student participants developing for 36 hours straight. Since the Kids Hackathon is for children ages 9-14, Kidpreneur has condensed it to 6 hours during the Maker Faire® with 9 kids for its intiation.

The goal for the event is to design and develop a functional video game with storyboard, programming and demonstration in the end. Kids will use the M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Scratch visual programming language to write their games. Thanh Tran, Kidpreneur's founder, said "The reason we want kids to use Scratch is because we believe they can complete the project on their own with little adult supervision. Most kids can play games that are programmed in Scratch but very few create games using this simple visual programming language. We believe these little techies at the hackathon will make you into believers."

The children will be organized into teams of 3 and will be competing for prizes and bragging rights. They will be supplied with snacks, lunch and support. The requirements and game type will be announced at the start of the event. In the end, each team will present and demonstrate their video game to judges including Colleen Case, Computer Graphics Technology Professor at Schoolcraft College, and Derrin Leppek, Director of Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Macomb Community College. So let the hacking begin!
