Summer Reading Challenge Helps Minority Kids See Themselves in Books

HOUSTON, July 14, 2015—What is the #ReadinColor Summer Challenge? Ask minority children’s book author Katina Chimney, who inspired by her own story, is on a mission to redefine the color of children's literature.

Last year 5,000 children's books were published and only 8% were about African-Americans, Latinos, Asians and Indians combined. Chimney, driven by the lack of diverse books in the market launched the #ReadinColor Summer Challenge to raise awareness and help children see more of themselves in the books they read.

Yolanda Norman of Houston says [My kids and I] went to a library and couldn't find a lot of multicultural books. We had three staff workers helping us. It led to a great conversation about needing more of these book out there and I totally see the importance of this contest.

All participants are challenged to read 10 diverse books and submit reading logs by August 20, 2015. Readers who submit their logs are entered into a drawing for a chance to win prizes. All winners are selected at random.

Chimney hopes the #ReadinColor Summer Challenge will open the eyes of readers and show the need for more diverse books and authors.

About the Author:
