ORANGE, N.J. - July 31, 2015 - PRLog -- New In-Home Art Program for Seniors

ORANGE NJ: Seniors should not miss out on the benefits of participatory arts programming just because they do not attend a day program or live in a group setting, according to Arts Unbound, the non-profit art studio and gallery for people with disabilities and seniors.

"We know homebound seniors experience depression at higher rates than other seniors and can benefit from the arts programming we have been offering in group settings," says Arts Unbound Director of Arts Education Armisey Smith.

With support from the Grotta Fund for Senior Care, Arts Unbound is now offering in-home visual arts instruction to seniors in Union, Morris, or Essex counties who face barriers to attending group programs. The Grotta Fund for Senior Care is an Advisory Council Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater MetroWest NJ. The goal of the program is to engage more seniors in beneficial activities and support the ability of seniors to age in place without forgoing the skill development or social interaction that support well-being.

Seniors can sign up to take two-hour art lessons in the home with a professional teaching artist. Lessons are designed to help seniors master new artistic techniques, try new materials, and express their creativity. Each two-hour session is $75 and includes all supplies. Sliding scale fees are also available. "Thanks to the generous support of the Grotta Fund, we can offer two-hour sessions at reduced cost for eligible seniors. No one should miss out," says Arts Unbound's Smith. To enroll, seniors or their family members should call Armisey Smith at 973-675-2787.

Arts Unbound is dedicated to the artistic achievement of people living with disabilities and for seniors. They provide visual arts education and professional development to help emerging artists compete in the retail market. By promoting the work of artists with disabilities and seniors, they focus on their art-making rather than any impairments, and by doing so challenge the stigma associated with disability and aging.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10am-4pm, and Saturdays noon-5pm.
