J. Graham Brown School student wins second consecutive Open Source High physics competition

Creation will become part of an online peer-to-peer high school

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - July 11, 2015 - PRLog -- Open Source High announced on July 6, 2015, the winning student of its May peer-to-peer teaching competition. J. Graham Brown School student Tryphena Sithu won the first place prize of $500.  The students were asked to create a two-minute video teaching about thermal energy. Tryphena also won the April video competition.

“Tryphena has become a big part of Open Source High. Her peers really enjoy her creative stop-motion animation videos.  I am lucky to have her be a part of this project. She also submitted an Algebra video for last month’s competition which is being voted on as we speak,” Jim Flannery, founder of Open Source High, said. “Thanks to the work of students like Tryphena, we are on our way to building an online peer-to-peer school where students are the teachers.  I am also grateful to their teacher, Mary Todd, for helping them create such great videos.”

Open Source High, which launched in fall 2014, has been building its curriculum by running monthly competitions in which high school students win cash by creating videos teaching physics, math, and history. Prize money for the spring competitions was provided by organizations including Boston University, Shure Microphones, CAD Audio, and Physics 24/7. The topic of thermal energy was announced May 1 and student entries were due May 31. A team of current and retired high school physics teachers critiqued the videos and the voting process was open to students across the country. The prize-winning videos are viewable at OpenSourceHigh.com.
