The Miracles of Salt That Just Keeps Giving

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease which affects mostly secretory glands and vital organs. There is not cure for CF, however research has shown great relief from home salt therapy.

LONDON, Ontario - July 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Cystic fibrosis is a disease which affects most secretory glands such mucus and sweat glands. The organs and parts of the body most affected include the lungs, liver, sinuses, pancreas and the private parts.

CF is a genetic illness that occurs because of the mutation within the CFer gene on chromosome 7.

When having CF, your mucous build-up allows for bacteria to grow which leads to various infections that can take place within the lungs, pancreas and sinus cavities.

CF Symptoms

Cystic fibrosis symptoms may vary from CFer person to person, where some symptoms may be bad on one day and then eased up on the next day.

Sufferers have very thick mucus build-ups within the airways, which is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria causing infections. As such lung infections are very common for cystic fibrosis sufferers, whereby if left untreated it may lead to severe liver damage. Patients may also suffer from repeated bouts of sinusitis infections, bronchitis and even pneumonia.

If CFer becomes worse over time, it may lead to pancreatitis, rectal prolapse, gallstones and even diabetes.

Other signs of CF include infertility, abnormal salty sweat, low bone density and a complete imbalance of minerals within the body.

Cystic Fibrosis Treatment

With no complete cure available at this point in time, CF treatments include:

*     Chest physical therapy.

*     Working with a team of specialists including dieticians, social workers and medical specialists to determine treatments options for you specifically.

*     Use of medications such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and mucous thinning medications.

Cystic Fibrosis and Salt Therapy

As patients with cystic fibrosis struggle to breathe, suffer from lung infections, coughing and have difficulty swallowing, new advances in research has allowed sufferers to utilise hypertonic saline cystic fibrosis treatments in easing symptoms.

A study held in Australia concluded that CF sufferers who surfed (and was essentially exposed to salty air) suffered less lung infections and breathing issues than those who didn’t. As quoted by the study, the team stated that “treatment with hypertonic saline at 7% inhaled twice per day reduces episodes of chest infection and is linked to improved lung function, improved quality of life, and better attendance at school or work.” (Work, 2009).

The solution is composed of water and salt where salt forms 7.0% of the hypertonic solution for CF patients. The process works in a similar manner to osmosis, where salt allows for the saline solution to draw fluids back into the airway which allows for better mucous drainage.

Thus, if a CF patient breathes salt particles through a home salt therapy  device, offering long-term exposure, then the inhaled salty air travels into the airway drawing water from its cells back into the airway thinning out the accumulation of mucous and reducing respiratory infections. Research has proved time and again that salt aerosol cystic fibrosis treatments allow for better breathing overall.

The treatment is inexpensive and effective where infants to adults suffering from CF are already beginning to feel a whole lot better and enjoy a better quality of life.
