Boost car park safety and security with an LED upgrade

Earlsmann, a UK-based manufacturer of LED lighting, is working with specialist consultant InterLED to install new lighting at several car parks in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. On the latest project, the housings for the pre-existing lighting were in good condition. Therefore, rather than replacing the complete luminaire, Earlsmann adapted its Bedford lighting by making minor alterations to the gear tray and diffuser to fit the existing light – avoiding expensive remedial work and thereby minimising the cost of the project.

Using sensors to achieve additional benefits

As the car park is quiet during night-time hours, the lighting solution includes microwave sensors that reduce energy use further. Due to the low ceiling height, the sensors have a more limited range than normal. This was overcome by pre-setting the light level to 50%, only switching to full brightness whenever movement is detected. The sensors are built into the Bedford luminaire, with some also incorporating an integral emergency pack to provide contingency lighting.

Earlsmann was able to increase the brightness of its standard Bedford lamp to provide a one-for-one replacement of the existing 150W metal halide fixtures. The new lighting provides the same level of light users were accustomed to, with improved colour rendering and definition due to the whiter colour of the light. This enhances the quality of CCTV footage, discouraging vandalism and creating a more secure and safer environment for car park users and their vehicles.

Earlsmann worked closely with InterLED throughout the design stage to ensure the client was happy with the end result. Mick Baines, Director at InterLED, has selected the Bedford as its standard offering for car park lighting due to its versatility, and has been “impressed with the output from the Bedford light and the ongoing support provided by Earlsmann”.
